Albedo is a dimensionless property that characterises a surface’s ability to reflect solar radiation. This parameter is now essential for the evaluation of building materials, urban surfaces, roofs, façades and, more broadly, for the analysis of urban heat island phenomena and summer thermal comfort.
Measurement principle

The AL-01 measures solar reflectance using a integrating sphere, employing a reflectometric approach suited to the characterisation of building materials and urban surfaces.
This technology enables:

The ASTM C1549 standard requires only 4 spectral bands for determining solar reflectance at near-ambient temperatures. With 12 spectral bands, the AL-01 allows for a more detailed characterisation of surfaces and better utilisation of data in technical and scientific studies.

The AL-01 is particularly suitable for:
- measure the albedo of floor coverings
- characterise roofs and facades
- compare cool roof and cool pavement materials
- assess the impact of materials on urban heat islands
- feed into SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) calculations
- carrying out measurement campaigns in the laboratory or in situ
As albedo is one of the input parameters for the SRI, measuring it is essential for assessing a surface’s ability to limit its heating under solar radiation.

The AL-01 is currently the only European measurement device capable of performing albedo measurements both in the laboratory and in the field, using the same instrument and the same measurement methodology.
